Sport Premium Statement 2019/2020

Funding per School as described by the Department for Education

‘Allocations for the academic year 2019 to 2020 are calculated using the number of pupils in years 1 to 6, as recorded in the January 2019 census as follows. Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive £16,000 and an additional payment of £10 per pupil.’ Manor Field falls into this category and received a total of £20,290 in 2019/2020.

Funding was received from West Sussex County Council, with 7/12 of the money at the end of October, and the rest at the end of April.

‘Schools are required to make ‘additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport’ offered. Manor Field is committed to using the funding to meet the DfE requirements to ‘develop and add to the PE and sport facilities’ already offered and to ‘build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.’

Development of Sports and PE at Manor Field

Manor Field is committed to developing Sport and PE across the entire school to raise standards, using the key areas stated by the DfE as guidelines:

  • ‘The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity - the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school.
  • The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement.
  • Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
  • Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
  • Increased participation in competitive sport.’

Maximising Sport and PE through the Sports Premium

Manor Field strives for Sport and PE to become a prominent feature of the school. Since September 2017, positive outcomes have been seen from the following actions:

  • Contracting Albion In The Community (AITC) to coach teachers to improve standards in the delivery of Physical Education in Games; as of July 2020, twenty-five members of staff have received coaching from Foundation to Year Six and expertise has been disseminated to colleagues.
  • Paying into Mid Sussex Active (MSA); staff have accessed CDP, including Inclusive PE and Outdoor and Adevnturous. This will continue into the new academic year.
  • Introduction of a new PE Scheme of Work (SoW) for Foundation and Key Stage One, with the addition of Outdoor and Adventurous being more embedded in 2019 / 2020
  • Increased participation in competitive sport through MSA events
  • Hosting of Inclusion PE, Dance and OAA CPD training run by MSA, attended by staff from local schools as well as Manor Field
  • Installation of an all-weather Running Track

Manor Field School Sports Premium Statement

The Government is providing funding to maintained primary schools as in previous years, specifically targeting the improvement of PE and Sport. For a full breakdown on how Manor Field plans to spend the £20,210 in 2020 / 2021, please see our ‘Sports Premium Planned Expenditure Report for 2020/2021’.

As a result of the additional funding, Physical Education now carries a higher profile at Manor Field. Significant improvements have been sustained to the PE teaching provision due to the implementation of a new Scheme of Work last year, focussing heavily on skills for the Foundation and Key Stage One pupils, and supported by the coaching provided by AITC. With the close links drawn between the MSA calendar and the teaching provision, pupils develop skills in their lessons which allow staff to accurately assess and identify pupils to represent Manor Field in inter-school events. Pupils have therefore experienced new sports and competitions. The Sports Leader has also tracked pupils across the school to ensure that opportunities are offered to all. Underactive pupils have also been more intensely identified and targeted to receive intervention from AITC, as well as attended festivals and competitions; this will continue into the new academic year, though will require a higher input in September 2020 due to the school closure earlier in the year.

The development of competitive sport has been a high priority for Manor Field over the past few years. The curriculum map, developed last year, allows all pupils the opportunity to participate in competitive sport at the end of each half term block of teaching, with those showing ability or enthusiasm being asked to represent the school in competitions run by the MSA. More inter-house competitions occurred in the Autumn Term and early part of the Spring Term. Continuing on from the introduction of the Daily Mile in Years Five and Six in September 2017, the running track, installed in March 2018, allowed pupils to run against the clock and identify personal best times. In June 2019, Year Six pupils began tracking their own times by creating line graphs and making statements about their own achievements. In November 2019, 2 pupils made the county finals by finishing within the top 25 for the locality - one child finished in second place. During the lockdown, all Year 6 pupils were given the opportunity to take part in the Mid Sussex Mile, receiving a medal for completion.

Active clubs remain an important part of the learning experience at Manor Field, with the continuation of more specialised ones such as Flamenco Dancing, Dance Mats, Marching Club and Yoga. It was the intention to  introduce new and revive old ones such as Athletics and Cricket in the Spring / Summer of 2020, however school closures prevented this from occurring.

Moving forwards to the academic year 2020 / 2021, we aim to continue to use the Sports Premium funding to extend the curriculum and make it as exciting for our pupils as possible. We are committed to staff development to ensure teachers have strong subject knowledge in order to consistently teach PE and sport to a good standard. Regular feedback from the AITC coach allows us to monitor and offer development opportunities as they arise. We consider our efforts and goals to be sustainable as well as the relationships we are forging with outside agencies. It is incredibly important that we focus our energies particularly on those who have spent a significant amount of time inactive during the school closures, as well as ensure that standards have not slipped across the board in the children’s physical skills and achievements.

As a result of the additional Sport Premium, Manor Field has already made sustainable changes:

  • Pupils are engaged in more physical activity which kickstarts a more healthier lifestyle
  • Inactive pupils are identified and targeted to become more engaged in physical activity
  • PE has a higher profile within school and develops more positive attitudes toward sport, with staff, governors and parents receiving bi-monthly, sport-specific newsletters that are also displayed in school and put on the school website
  • Teachers are more skilled and confident in their practice
  • More general and competitive sports opportunities are offered to pupils
  • A running track has been installed which has allowed pupils to maintain physical activity, even when the weather is poor. Key-worker children were also able to continue their daily exercise through the use of the track, whilst maintaining social distancing.
