Autumn 1 2018/2019
Plot to Plate Theme - In this theme we will discover the origins of the food we eat, where it is grown and how it is sometimes processed before it ends up on our plates.
The theme is inspired by three different fiction books which take the children on a special journey which they map as part of their story writing. On the way, the children are faced with a challenge to create a new soup. Please see our Theme overview below for more information and how you could support your child's learning at home.
We are learning all about animals.
In this theme our learning journey will be all about animals. An exciting letter invites us to become Zoologists. Our main focus will be Science, where we will become animal experts through researching common animals. We will also make links within Geography, exploring the continents and oceans where these animals live.
We will use animals as a basis for our art work - looking at animal patterns and then creating texture and patterns in clay. In Design and Technology (DT) we will use our knowledge of axles in order to create a moving vehicle to help keepers in a zoo to move animal feed.
On Wednesday 23rd May 2018, Year One went to Drusillas Park in Alfriston, to support our learning about animals and how scientists can put them into different groups. It was a beautiful day when we set off in two coaches. When we arrived we were eager to see all the animals and learn even more about them.
During our visit we took part in a work shop about 'fur, feathers and scales.' and we were able to show the zoo keeper all that we had learnt about the different groups animals can be sorted into - mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians.
Finally, we enjoyed our lunch and a well deserved play in the park. Year One would like to thank all the adults who supported us on this trip.
The Year One children are learning about senses.
In this theme our learning will take us on a journey through the senses . Our main focus will be Science where we will research which part of the body we associate with each of the five senses.
We will explore a range of different mark making techniques and use these to add detail to our sketches. We will explore our school environment and then use this knowledge to create a sensory trail for others to follow.

Senses Trail and Whole Term Learning
Year 1 have had an amazing time this term learning all about their senses. Our senses help us to understand the world around us. The children have tasted, eaten, smelt, touched and listened. Also they made their own sensory bunting. On Wednesday 22nd March we held a senses trail so that our parents could experience our learning. It was a beautiful day.
